Abstract

A la altura de 1810 la sociedad existente en la colonia española de Cuba resultaba impermeable al individualismo que en la Europa revolucionaria y en las Trece Colonias permitió fundamentar la idea de las libertades y de los derechos naturales del hombre. El proceso de reforma filosófica que se había iniciado hacia fines del siglo XVIII se propuso, en el marco de la apertura a Cortes en España, construir desde la academia un discurso diferente. El más importante exponente de esta tendencia y quien daría al traste con el primer esbozo de un concepto de derechos y libertades con sentido individualista y carácter universal dentro de la Isla, sería el presbítero y profesor de filosofía del Real y Conciliar Seminario de San Carlos y San Ambrosio, Félix Varela.
