Abstract

No contexto atual, o setor educacional está sendo, particularmente afetado e começa a dar evi-dências da necessidade de se inserir em uma nova fase evolutiva, isto é, partir para a adoção de estraté-gias administrativas que lhe permitam elevar os padrões de qualidade e produtividade, tal como ocorre nas empresas comerciais e industriais. Procura-se revisar os conceitos das Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES), por estas serem organizações que possuem sistemas organizacionais com características diversas, classificando-as como organizações complexas. Os referênciais teóricos, identificam as fontes dos conceitos que começam a ser utilizados nas IES, procurando assim, caracterizá-las em linhas gerais e analisar a evolução do Ensino Superior, situando as IES enquanto organizações institucionalisadas.
