Abstract

El presente artículo expone las múltiples caras de la historia que rodea a la imagen escultórica de Santa Teresa de Jesús que se conserva en la capilla de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria en Mérida, Yucatán, México. Inicia con algunos detalles biográficos de Santa Teresa de Jesús y su místico vínculo con la Nueva España. Se considera también la historia y la descripción arquitectónica del templo dieciochesco y el análisis del único retablo barroco salomónico dorado que se conserva en la capital de Yucatán. Es la historia de una obra de arte que ha sobrevivido numerosas pruebas para poder ser admirada por la sociedad del Mayab.
