Fotos con moros. La versión decimonónica de un estereotipo

Abstract

Una fotografía tomada durante la Exposición de Filipinas de 1887 en Madrid nos muestra dos parejas de musulmanes. Años más tarde aparece otro grupo de fotografías que retratan moros filipinos expuestos en el St. Louis World's Fair de Estados Unidos. Se puede reconocer su adscripción islámica gracias a una serie de atributos visuales, reforzados por los comentarios que les dedicaron durante el transcurso de dichas exposiciones. Reconocemos en estas fotografías la pervivencia de una imagen, la del estereotipo del moro, que se constituyó a partir de una serie de discursos tanto visuales como escritos que circularon en el Occidente cristiano y en España en particular desde el siglo XIII. Desde pinturas religiosas hasta álbumes de trajes y costumbres nos muestran personajes con turbante como un modo de identificar su pertenencia religiosa.
