Historia de las milicias canarias

Abstract

En las siguientes páginas se hace un breve repaso a la historia de las milicias canarias, unidades militares que embrionariamente y de forma espontánea, acuciadas por la necesidad de defenderse contra ataques piráticos, fueron naciendo apenas producida la incorporación del archipiélago a España. Una vez que se organizaron y reglamentaron tuvieron una enorme importancia en el mantenimiento de la unión de Canarias con la metrópoli, pues durante más de dos siglos fueron las únicas fuerzas defensivas contra ataques no sólo ya piráticos, sino de flotas de las principales naciones europeas. Tras su desaparición en el último tercio del siglo xix, tristemente su recuerdo casi se ha perdido entre los canarios.
