Las manifestaciones artísticas de una ciudad Maya sagrada: Izamal, Yucatán, México

Abstract

Izamal, Yucatán, México es una ciudad muy especial porque ha sido considerada sagrada por más de quince siglos. La antigua casa del dios-sacerdote Zamná fue lugar de oración del pueblo maya hasta el inicio de la evangelización católica que estuvo a cargo de los frailes franciscanos. En el siglo XVI la llegada de la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Izamal inició una nueva devoción entre los mayas que vieron en ella a una madre amorosa, por lo que el cariño del pueblo yucateco hacia ella perdura hasta nuestros días. La sacralidad de la ciudad se hace evidente en las manifestaciones artísticas que en ella se han producido y de las que da cuenta este trabajo.
