Abstract

The rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Malawi, collectively known as mbuna, comprise a diverse assemblage of haplochromine fishes currently assigned to 14 recognized genera. One of these, Metriaclima, was originally described for a group of mbuna collectively known as the “Blue-Black Pseudotropheus zebra Complex” referring to the color pattern of black bars on a blue body of most of the initial members of this group. However, this pattern is not a diagnostic characteristic of the genus. Metriaclima is distinguished by a moderately sloped ethmo-vomerine block with a swollen rostral tip, the presence of bicuspid teeth in the anterior portion of the outer tooth row of both jaws, and a characteristic feeding mechanism. The new species, Metriaclima staufferi, is distinguished from most other congeners by the absence of conspicuous bars on its flank.
