Abstract

This study explores the portrayal of women in Nazik Al-Malaika’s poetry. As a prominent Arab poet known for her contributions to modern Arabic literature, her poetry offers an insightful perspective on the experiences, struggles, and empowerment of women in patriarchal societies. Through Al-Malaika’s evocative language, vivid imagery, and skilled use of poetic devices, readers delve into women’s inner world and explore themes such as identity, agency, and societal expectations. The study employs a qualitative analysis approach, examining poems selected by Al-Malaika to highlight the ways in which she portrayed women. The analysis involves close reading of the poems and identifying recurring themes, symbols, and narrative techniques employed by the poet to depict women’s experiences. Moreover, this study draws upon literary criticism, feminist theory, and cultural analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of Al-Malaika’s portrayal of women. The findings revealed that Al-Malaika’s poetry presents women as complex, multifaceted individuals who confront societal constraints while seeking self-expression and empowerment. Her poems often depict internal conflicts, the desire for freedom, and the resilience of women. Al-Malaika captured the struggles and aspirations of women through powerful metaphors, symbols, and introspective narratives, shedding light on their lived experiences. This study also reveals a profound understanding of the challenges faced by women in patriarchal societies. Her portrayal of women as strong, resilient, and seeking self-determination challenges traditional norms and empowers readers to question and reevaluate societal perceptions. Al-Malaika’s poetry contributes to the feminist discourse in Arabic literature by offering a diverse range of female voices and experiences, highlighting the need for gender equality and social change. Further studies can explore the interplay between her personal experiences and her portrayal of women. Moreover, future research can delve into the reception and impact of Al-Malaika’s poetry on readers and its contribution to broader social and cultural transformation.
