The Centripetal Force Generated by Rotational Motion and its Possible Health Effect

Abstract

Rotational motion refers to movement along a curved or circular path. Many do not realize that an object undergoing circular motion experiences a force directed toward the center of the circular path. This force, known as centripetal force, is responsible for separating plasma from blood in a centrifuge. It can also cause a fighter jet pilot to faint and lose control of the aircraft during high-speed turns. Many amusement park rides involve circular motion as well, placing significant strain on the riders’ bodies. At West Virginia University, we developed a laboratory experiment for our introductory physics courses, mainly taken by pre-life sciences students, to help students gain a better understanding of centripetal force—many of these students will eventually become medical doctors.
