Abstract

Repeated voluntary foreign body (FB) ingestion is common in patients with drug addiction or psychiatric disorders. Complications range from simple retention to gastrointestinal perforation. We report the case of a 23-year-old patient, a chronic drug and alcohol abuser, who ingested several FBs such as lighters, bottle caps, pieces of glass, and catheters, with colonic and gastric gastrointestinal retention. Laparoscopically assisted surgical management allowed for the extraction of the FBs via gastrostomy, colonic emptying, and conversion to laparotomy. The postoperative outcome was favorable. Repeated FB ingestion in an autolytic context requires a multidisciplinary evaluation. CT scanning is essential for lesion assessment, and surgery may be required in cases of stagnation or risk of perforation, particularly in multiple and voluntary forms.
