Abstract
Treatment of multiple myeloma in elderly patients with significant comorbidities poses major clinical and logistic challenges; more so if the patients live in remote areas or in resource-poor countries. There is a need for simple and convenient, yet effective, therapeutic regimen which does not impact on the quality of life; and, is affordable for use in resource-poor countries. In this report we describe 11 patients (aged 63–90 years) with significant comorbidities, treated with a simple, all-oral therapeutic regimen comprising melphalan (4-6mg on alternate days x 7) prednisolone (50mg on alternate days x 7) and curcumin (Curcu ForteR, 1 twice daily from day 15-28) achieving effective disease control for 8 months to 9 years (median 2 years). The treatment was well tolerated, without any major adverse events or treatment-related symptom burden. We hope the convenience and cost-effectiveness of this regimen would be of interest, leading to further evaluation in larger clinical studies.
