Abstract
Introduction: Although dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), data on the prevalence and determinants of dyslipidemia in Bangladeshi children with CKD are limited. The current study aimed to establish the prevalence, pattern, and determinants of dyslipidemia in children with CKD. Methods: Between April 2021 and March 2022, a cross-sectional study was conducted among children aged 6 months to 18 years with CKD stages 3 to 5D who presented to the Department of Pediatric Nephrology, Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute. Patients undergoing lipid-lowering drugs were excluded. Clinical, sociodemographic, and laboratory results, including fasting lipid profiles, were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results: A total of 71 children with CKD (59.2% male) were enrolled, with a mean age of 10.2 ± 4.8 years. The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia was 66.2%. Among CKD children with dyslipidemia, 70.2% had more than one lipid abnormality. Hypertriglyceridemia was the most frequent lipid disorder (57.8%). In multivariate logistic regression, low family income (AOR: 23.12; 95% CI: 1.64–328.19) and proteinuria (AOR: 9.2; 95% CI: 1.38–61.64) were significantly associated with dyslipidemia. Conclusion: Hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL were the most common dyslipidemia found in children with CKD. We recommend closely monitoring dyslipidemia in CKD patients with proteinuria, and low socioeconomic conditions.
