EV Battery Improvements in the Battery Management System with Charging Methods: A General Review

Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) are a promising alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles for reducing carbon footprints. However, electric vehicle batteries are the primary reason for limiting the market adoption of EVs. Challenges related to managing battery parameters, particularly during charging, are areas of active research and development. The Battery Management System (BMS) monitors various parameters, including voltage, current, and temperature. It then uses the collected data to manage the charging and discharging of the battery, provide a state of charge and state of health for the battery, and diagnose potential issues. Charging methods are a major factor in the efficiency, safety, and lifespan of batteries, which require active monitoring and governance by the BMS. This paper reviews the methods utilized by BMS for parameter monitoring and the different charging methods for EVs. It then discusses improvements in battery performance that are related to the BMS’s monitoring of charging. Further research into BMS functionalities is key to advancing electric vehicle technology.
