Revolutionizing Oral Surgery with Three-dimensional Intraoral Scanning: Enhancing Precision, Patient Understanding, and Medicolegal Protection

Abstract

Three-dimensional intraoral scanning technology is gaining acceptance in oral surgery to replace conventional impression taking techniques. This article reviews how the advent of digital scans will improve spatial accuracy in diagnosis and surgical planning, with particular emphasis on volumetric assessment and intra-operative guidance. Evidence from recent clinical applications is reviewed with a particular regard to the patient experience, especially as it relates to comfort, communication and visual consent. A secondary focus is given to the medico-legal value of permanent digital records including their importance in documentation, surgical traceability and post treatment audit. In parallel the benefits and current limitations of the technology are discussed in order to identify areas where standardization is needed. The overall conclusion suggests that intraoral scanning may enhance a higher clinical accuracy while simultaneously contributing to a better informed consent and lower legal liability in oral surgery.
