Abstract

This research introduces a novel and comprehensive vendor selection approach for non-production mobile equipment dispatching system in underground mining, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the industry. The methodology combines the Request for Proposal (RFP) process with strategic insights from the Kraljic Portfolio Matrix and in-depth analysis from the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) technique. This combination helps navigate the uncharted waters of implementing a new dispatching system, providing a solid framework for multi-criteria decision-making. The RFP process ensures a systematic and thorough evaluation of potential suppliers, while the Kraljic Portfolio Matrix strategically classifies the dispatching system based on procurement risk and operational impact. The DEMATEL technique enriches decision- making by revealing the causal relationships and influence among various selection criteria, including technological capabilities, vendor experience, and cost-effectiveness. This fusion of methods provides a robust framework for selecting vendors uniquely tailored to meet the challenges of implementing a pioneering dispatching system in underground mining. This methodology facilitates an efficient and comprehensive vendor selection process that aligns with the strategic objectives of the mining operation. The paper concludes with a case study that exemplifies this integrated approach’s practical application and effectiveness, highlighting its potential to enable more informed, transparent, and strategically coherent decisions in a field poised for innovative technological advancement.
