Abstract

This study examines the role of line managers in managing subordinates’ behaviour in the workplace. The study was conducted at the Ningo-Prampram Municipal Directorate in Ghana. A qualitative research approach was employed, and data were collected from 74 participants using a convenience sampling technique through interviews with both line managers and subordinates. The findings revealed that extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience were the most important personality traits for line manager success. Additionally, the roles of setting clear expectations, providing feedback, coaching, motivating, and managing conflict were essential. Effective implementation of their responsibilities depended on strong communication, empathy, trust, fairness, and support from line managers. The results highlight the critical impact line managers have on employee attitudes and performance through their personalities, roles, and implementation approaches. The study recommends that institutions should provide training programmes for line managers on how to effectively manage subordinates’ behaviour.
