The risks to business presented by organised and economically motivated criminal enterprises

Abstract

Purpose - Based on a presentation at the 24th International Symposium on Economic Crime, September 2006, at the University of Cambridge, this paper aims to discuss the risks to business from organised crime. Design/methodology/approach - The paper draws on the author's experience as head of the Punjab police and from data gleaned from the Punjab police as well as other sources. Findings - The paper shows that collusion exists between some parts of business and criminal groups and the ever present danger of terrorism. Originality/value - The practical experience of the author shows that organized and economically motivated criminal enterprises target legitimate business in order to whitewash themselves into respectability.
