Abstract
PurposeThis study aims to map the knowledge structure and evolutionary trends of global giant panda conservation research using bibliometric methods, and to examine the research focus and collaboration patterns.Design/methodology/approachBased on the Web of Science Core Collection database, this study employs VOSviewer and R-Bibliometrix to conduct a bibliometric analysis of giant panda-related literature published between 2000 and 2025.FindingsFirst, keyword co-occurrence clustering reveals that the field has evolved into four core knowledge modules: “genetic evolution”, “behavioral ecology”, “forest habitat utilization” and “conservation management”. Second, micro-theme publications (e.g. genetics, behavior, physiology) increased steadily from 17 in 2003 to 102 in 2025, while macro-theme publications (e.g. habitat, protected areas, ecosystem services) averaged only 16.25 per year before 2015 but surged to an annual average of 56.45 thereafter, indicating that micro-biological research and macro-governance research have evolved in parallel with both upward trends. Third, international cooperation network analysis shows that China, as the sole range state, occupies the absolute core position, the United States is the most important international partner, and other countries participate primarily through bilateral or multilateral cooperation.Originality/valueThis study reveals a growing research focus on macro-ecological governance and identifies a persistent gap in institutional and socio-economic studies. Future research should address these under-explored areas to advance the field.
