Talking to a taxman abouttalking with the taxman about poetry

Abstract

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is a reflection on the nature and purposes of taxation. Design/methodology/approach - This is a poem. Findings - This is a meditation on accountability, the rights of individuals and the relationship between taxation and society. Research limitations/implications - It stimulates thought about the ethical foundations of taxation in western democracies and the moral implications of a lack of accountability and tax evasion. Originality/value - This paper is an individual comment on the connections between financial systems and the broader scope of human experience, including art, popular culture and ethics.
