Agricultura familiar e desenvolvimento sustentável no semi-árido baiano

Abstract

A população do semi-árido baiano é constituída, em sua maioria, por pequenos produtores rurais que tem garantido a sobrevivência através da cultura do sisal. O sisal é uma planta resistente à seca cuja fibra é muito utilizada para a fabricação de cordas e tapetes. No fim da década de 70 com a crise no mercado do sisal, os pequenos agricultores que viviam da agricultura familiar enfrentavam dificuldades devido aos preços baixos do sisal. Neste momento, iniciou-se um processo de organização dos trabalhadores rurais que culminou com a criação da APAEB - Valente. Este texto irá descrever as estratégias utilizadas no processo de implantação desta Associação, as principais atividades desenvolvidas e os resultados obtidos ao longo do tempo.
