The changing role of patent libraries

Abstract

Historically, the role of INPI's regional centres in France has been to enable visitors to consult patent documentation, originally on paper, subsequently on microfilm and most recently on CD-ROM. Later, with a view to extending their remit of providing documentation, they were transformed into miniature replicas of INPI itself, since it is now possible to file French and European patents, as well as international patents via the PCT route, not to mention trade marks and utility models, at our network of regional centres. The challenge we face today is to replace our relatively passive approach of waiting for clients to come to us by focusing on disseminating patent information more effectively. For the present and the immediate future the focus of our efforts will be three-fold.
