Intellectual property service variations: The PTO and PTDL

Abstract

The article describes the result of a research project involving a study of the differences in service obtainable at the USPTO and the Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries (PTDL). In the project three techniques were investigated: 1. (1) Performing a field of search and a prior art search;2. (2) Locating 14 common patent search tools;3. (3) Comparing the responses to the same questions about patents. The conclusion was that the PTO is much more efficient for making a search through patents but that a novice receives much more help at a PTDL about how to make a search.
