The North American Free Trade Agreement : Telecommunications in perspective

Author

Listed:
  • Shefrin, Ivan H.

Abstract

This article describes the negotiating positions of Mexico, Canada and the USA as they strove for agreement on the telecommunications chapter of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and then outlines the main provisions of the chapter as it was agreed in October 1992. The agreement is likely to have immediate effects especially on Mexico's market and its prospects as a hub for the fast-expanding Latin American telecommunications business. The prospects for a wider regional free trade area are also enhanced.
