The social impact of emerging telephone services

Abstract

This article considers the complex social issues raised by new technological developments in telecommunications under the general headings of privacy, intrusion, equity, a 'human touch' and freedom of expression. Caller identification is discussed in some detail. The author concludes that, ironically, technological innovations and the regulatory response to them could eventually erode the popularity of the telephone itself.
