The Australian telecommunications subscriber equipment industry : Technical change and international competitiveness

Abstract

This article reports a study of the Australian manufacturing industry in telecommunications subscriber equipment. The impact and interrelationship of technical change and international competitiveness were examined, and compared to the situation found in the US and Japanese industries. The most important influence on firms' commercial behaviour in Australia was found to be the role of Australia Telecom. The author makes several recommendations and observations about the adjustments necessary for the Australian industry in order for it to adopt new technology effectively and complete successfully in international markets. The lessons learned may be of use to policy makers in other countries with small markets, and in developing countries.
