The double-edged sword effect of ecosystem embeddedness on disruptive innovation: The perspective of environmental uncertainty

Abstract

Disruptive innovation is recognized as an effective strategy for breaking established patterns and achieving substantial developmental progress through technological advancements. Current literature highlights that ecosystem embeddedness, defined by structural coupling and interactions with a variety of entities, is a vital approach for enterprises to overcome resource constraints and gain competitive advantages. However, there is a notable gap in the literature regarding the mechanisms by which firms’ ecosystem embeddedness influence disruptive innovation. In order to investigate how ecosystem embeddedness affects disruptive innovation and the moderating effect of environmental uncertainty, empirical evidence from Chinese A-share manufacturing listed companies from 2013 to 2022 was used in this study. The results indicate that ecosystem embeddedness has a double-edged sword impact on disruptive innovation. Furthermore, environmental uncertainty plays a moderating effect between ecosystem embeddedness and disruptive innovation. Through our research, the process of how enterprises actively shape technological disruption conditions and narrow the technological frontier gap through ecosystem embeddedness has been elaborated in detail.
