Unpacking the impact of Big Data on business performance: Do open innovation and digital technology adoption matter?

Abstract

Big Data critically influences business performance, yet research gaps persist regarding “what Big Data is utilized for” to improve business performance and “how to process Big Data” to ensure its benefits. Grounded in organizational information processing theory, this study investigates the mediating role of open innovation and the moderating role of digital technology adoption in the relationship between Big Data's volume, variety, and velocity (3Vs) and business performance. Survey data from 368 Chinese firms, analyzed via ordinary least squares regression, reveal that open innovation partially mediates the relationships between Big Data's 3Vs and business performance. The adoption of information and communication digital enabling technologies strengthens this mediated relationship, whereas the adoption of advanced robotics and integration digital enabling technologies does not. These findings clarify how and when Big Data's 3Vs enhance business performance through open innovation, offering valuable insights for managers on effectively leveraging digital technologies to unlock Big Data's value.
