Transforming energy resilience through supply chain digitization: risk management as a mediator

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between supply chain digitization, risk management, and energy resilience in Chinese energy enterprises. Drawing on the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Resilience theory frameworks, the research establishes a model positioning risk management as a mediating factor. Data was gathered from 240 participants across Chinese energy companies and analyzed using both Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The results reveal that supply chain digitization is significantly shaped by five key factors: digital technology (DT), process optimization (PO), employee skills and training (EST), digital transformation strategy (DTS), and innovation strategy (IS). The analysis confirms that risk management plays a crucial bridge connecting supply chain digitization to enhanced energy resilience. The fsQCA results identify multiple effective pathways leading to improved energy resilience outcomes. This research highlights how supply chain digitization strengthens energy resilience through effective risk management practices, providing practical guidance for digital integration in the energy sector. The findings contribute to both theoretical understanding and practical application by identifying essential preconditions for successful supply chain digitization and demonstrating how enterprises can leverage digital capabilities through strategic risk management to boost energy resilience.
