Abstract

In this paper, we study pedestrian route choice behaviors by conducting controlled experiments. Three different routes in a university campus, including two wider ones and a narrow one, were considered. We also conducted surveys before the experiment to collect some stated data. Since in the experiment of 2022, pedestrians' route choices were less predictable and more random, we also repeated the same experiment in 2023 and tried to collect more data, including the individual answers for Big Five Personality Tests and the Fatigue Levels for each run, etc. Generally speaking, the results of BL and MNL models in two years are qualitatively similar, and all the signs of coefficients do not change. Nevertheless, the quantitative differences could be found, e.g., the ρ2 of 2023 are higher than that of 2022 for most runs. In addition, we analyze the quantitative divergence between SP and RP results in these experiments. We also introduce a new indicator named Percentage Difference to conduct regressions. Finally, we find there are more similarities than differences between the results of two years, which confirms the main decision-making mechanisms of pedestrians in such an environment.
