Control of pollution of the sea: workshop presentation

Author

Listed:
  • Dunnet, George M.

Abstract

A brief abstract is provided of each of the formal presentations and the discussions which they generated. Less formal contributions are also recorded. General conclusions were arrived at after detailed discussion and these are set out in the paper. They include: the need for a holistic approach to pollution of the seas and recognition of the need to involve local communities in reducing pollution by education, encouraging commitment and partnerships, and operating on the precautionary principle; the need to develop effective but simplified ad hoc monitoring techniques, and the design and continuation of long-term monitoring in the marine environment; the need for more effective enforcement of existing regulations and legislation; and the need to develop effective international action.
