Offshore lands of the USA : The US exclusive economic zone, continental shelf and outer continental shelf

Abstract

Confusion exists regarding definitions of and the interrelationships between the US Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the geological and legal (juridical) continental shelf, the US continental shelf, the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), and the OCS Planning Areas. The background of these terminologies is discussed, and the extent of overlap and non-overlap of some of these areas is demonstrated in tables and a map. The discussion is limited to considerations applicable to mineral resources. Issues relating to fisheries and other resources, and navigation and other aspects of maritime law are not covered.
