From abandoned farmland to afforestation: Legal and spatial perspectives on land consolidation in Serbia

Abstract

The growing impact of climate change in Serbia underscores the urgent need to identify candidate areas where afforestation may be considered as a key adaptation and mitigation measure. This study applies a combined geospatial–legal approach to examine whether agricultural land consolidation can enable afforestation on abandoned farmland, while recognising that final suitability depends on site-specific ecological, socio-economic, and legal conditions.
