Indirect export product quality spillover and corporate innovation

Abstract

Leveraging China’s 2008 innovative city policy (ICP) and unique customs data that reveal firm-level export volume and supply chain partner identities, we examine the effects of setting up innovative cities in supplier firms’ locations on the quality of their customer firms’ exports. The robust findings suggest that suppliers in ICP cities (innovative suppliers) positively contribute to the improved quality of their customers’ exports. We identify two mechanisms: innovative suppliers provide new products to customers, and they facilitate knowledge transfer along the supply chain. Furthermore, the effect is more salient for: (1) firms with closer geographic proximity of suppliers and customers and better supplier–customer relationships, (2) smaller suppliers or suppliers that operate in provinces where intellectual property protection is strong, and (3) customers that export high-tech products or that export products to developed countries.
