Abstract

Urban Air Mobility and Advanced Air Mobility are poised to transform transportation by providing innovative solutions for passenger and cargo travel through aerial routes. As this sector evolves, various technical, regulatory, and operational challenges must be addressed before these systems can be safely and effectively integrated into existing transportation networks. This research addresses a gap in current industry research by providing unique insights from industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders involved in the development process. The study employed a qualitative, exploratory approach, involving four groups of expert interviews, each focusing on distinct aspects and phases of development. Each group responded to 8 to 12 questions covering topics such as cybersecurity, airspace management, communication systems, safety, technology, infrastructure, regulations, and economic viability. The results identified six key themes, including detect and avoid systems/airspace management, vertiport infrastructure, operational efficiency, and harmonization and standardization of regulations, which appeared across all groups. By capturing insights and concerns from leading professionals, the report highlights existing barriers and suggests crucial steps for overcoming them. Understanding these perspectives is essential for shaping policies, advancing technology, and developing business strategies that will influence the future. The findings of this research can inform future development of advanced systems for Urban Air Mobility and Advanced Air Mobility.
