Abstract

This study investigates the impact of corporate waste generation on the cost of debt. A sample of STOXX 600 firms covering the period from 2016 to 2024 is used. The findings reveal that lenders perceive effective waste management as a signal of managerial efficiency and reduced risk. Firms with higher levels of waste generation tend to face higher debt costs, with the effect being more pronounced for small firms which incur greater costs due to increased risk.
