Urban-rural financial disparities and family investment in education

Abstract

Financial disparities between urban and rural areas are a prominent phenomenon in China. This present research aims to uncover their far-reaching implications for families’ decisions on education investment. Drawing on a large-scale survey in China over a decade, this paper generates suggestive evidence that urban-rural financial disparities lead to reduced education investment at the household level. This impact is even stronger for rural families. These results persist under multiple econometric strategies. Further investigation reveals that access to loans and returns on financial assets are core mechanisms mediating the relation. Overall, this study supplements current literature on financial development and education.
