Agricultural insurance, green finance, and agricultural low-carbon transition

Abstract

This study investigates whether agricultural insurance encourages a shift toward low-carbon practices in agriculture and explores how green finance moderates this effect. Using panel data for 293 Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2010 to 2023, we find that agricultural insurance reduces agrochemical input intensity. Mechanism tests indicate that the effect is mediated by enhanced agricultural labor productivity and greater research and development intensity. Moderation analysis indicates that green finance crowds out the positive impact of agricultural insurance. Heterogeneity results show stronger effects in less developed and agriculture-dependent regions. This study highlights the need to better coordinate agricultural insurance and green finance to accelerate sustainable agricultural transformation.
