Abstract

Utilizing statistical data spanning from 2012 to 2023 across 31 provincial-level administrative divisions in mainland China (Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao excluded), this study conducts a comprehensive analysis of how financial deepening and educational resource mismatches influence regional economic development imbalance. The results demonstrate that financial deepening significantly mitigates regional economic development imbalances, with educational resource mismatches serving as a mediating pathway in this relationship. Further exploratory analysis uncovers notable heterogeneity in the mitigating effect of financial deepening on regional economic development imbalance across eastern, central, and western regions. Moreover, the impact of financial deepening on regional economic development imbalance differs not only between regions with high and low population aging rates but also between regions showing high and low levels of openness towards the outside world.
