Abstract

Ecosystem services provide valuable resources for forest companies and contribute to their production processes. Due to concerns about environmental issues caused by their business operations, forest companies face high pressure from stakeholders to reduce their negative impacts on forest ecosystems. A growing body of literature highlights the associated risks and opportunities to these companies due to their dependence on forest ecosystem services. However, there has been a limited understanding of how forest companies consider ecosystem services. Therefore, we conducted a review of studies that surveyed representatives from forest companies regarding their perceptions and knowledge of ecosystem services as well as companies’ actions related to environmental sustainability. The review highlights that a company’s actions to enhance the provision of ecosystem services can support its environmental sustainability goals. Additionally, incorporating ecosystem services accounting into their business strategies could help forest companies overcome potential risks related to natural resources, including compliance with environmental laws and policies. However, forest companies appear to have a limited understanding of ecosystem services, and their interest in ecosystem services comes from strict legislation, pressures from stakeholders, and motivations to gain competitive advantage.
