Abstract

•Brazil’s new environmental licensing law (15.190/2025) dismantles key preventative safeguards.•The shift from a three-phase to a single-license system weakens environmental oversight.•Deregulation threatens regulating, provisioning, and cultural ecosystem services at a global scale.•Reduced assessments and decentralized authority increase risks of deforestation and habitat fragmentation.•The legislative rollback contradicts Brazil’s international climate and biodiversity commitments.
