Robustness of vector rogue waves induced by plane wave perturbation

Abstract

We investigate excitations of vector rogue waves on a periodic background in two-component defocusing Manakov system. Exact solutions are obtained by exploiting the system’s SU(2) symmetry. The robustness of rogue wave excitations requires that the SU(2) transformation acts as a weak plane wave perturbation superimposed on the plane wave background. Specifically, we introduce a modified modulational instability analysis to elucidate the underlying mechanism responsible for the robustness of vector rogue waves on a periodic background. The results reveal that the evolution of the weak plane wave perturbation is governed by modulational stable regimes. Numerical simulations show excellent agreement with the analytical predictions, thereby opening avenues for experimentally observing robust vector rogue wave excitations on non-plane wave backgrounds. Moreover, we present higher-order rogue waves on the periodic background in detail. This work can be extended to investigate robust excitations of other localized waves on periodic backgrounds, such as Akhmediev breathers.
