Abstract

A centrifugal pendulum vibration absorber (CPVA) is a passive damping device with widespread application in rotating machinery for effectively suppressing the torsional vibration of the power source. Herein, we report the integration of a CPVA with a torque converter for analyzing the coupled centrifugal, gravitational and fluid force field effects on stability and chaotic response. Accordingly, gravity, dynamic and static pressure and friction resistance of the viscous rotational fluid are comprehensively considered when establishing the differential equation of motion of the CPVA to best simulate the actual application. The response equations are derived and solved using the perturbation method in conjunction with the multiple scale method. The stable interval is determined using the Lyapunov stability criterion, and the bifurcation generation mechanisms are analyzed. Based on the investigation of the pendulum order response and chaotic behavior, this paper proposes optimization methods with respect to torsional excitation, tuning characteristics, and fluid properties. Finally, the vibration damping performance of the CPVA is evaluated by combining the results of multi-body dynamic simulations and experimental tests. Moreover, methods are proposed to guide the design of the CPVA.
