Study on the bifurcation of 3D patterns in a dielectric barrier discharge with modulated gas gap

Abstract

The variations of spatiotemporal behaviors of 3D patterns in the bifurcation process are systematically studied in dielectric barrier discharge with modulated gas gap. Four novel types of 3D patterns are self-organized in the non-uniform electric field as the voltage increases. The spatiotemporal behaviors of 3D patterns in the bifurcation sequence are investigated using an intensified charge-coupled device camera, photomultiplier tubes and a high-speed video camera. It is found that the special spatiotemporal behavior of each pattern develops from that of the former one during the bifurcation process. The electric field simulated by solving the Poisson equation, explains not only the spatiotemporal behavior of the pattern but also those of the related patterns in bifurcation sequence. The temporal evolution of discharge in the z-direction under different voltages demonstrates the distinct 3D characteristics of the observed patterns. This work is significant to the development of three-dimensional pattern dynamics.
