Thirty years of indian economic research: A bibliometric analysis of its evolution and global influence

Abstract

India’s economic transformation and increasing global prominence have elevated the significance of its economic research. This paper employs bibliometric tools, including CiteSpace and VOSviewer, to map the evolution of Indian economic research from 1991 to 2024. The analysis identifies three distinct phases: (1) 1991–2001, focused on economic reforms and globalization; (2) 2002–2012, centered on trade liberalization and industrial competitiveness; and (3) 2013–present, marked by a shift toward environmental economics, energy transitions, and sustainable development. Since 2013, environmental science has emerged as a dominant research area, driven by key themes such as "carbon emissions" and "renewable energy." While Indian scholars and institutions are now at the forefront of this research, Western journals continue to exert significant academic influence. Our findings suggest that expanding quantitative methodologies, exploring emerging fields such as the digital economy, and fostering deeper international collaboration will further enhance the global impact of Indian economic research, offering valuable insights for scholars and policymakers.
