Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of Jacobsen et al.'s, 2019 study on tourism policies and practices in southwestern Norway titled '‘Hotspot crowding and over-tourism: Antecedents of destination attractiveness’. The paper synthesises the original study's findings and tracks influence on Norwegian tourism policies, destination governance strategies, and industry practices. The study's insights into crowding reactions and destination attractiveness informed national and regional strategies, including cruise visitor quotas. The paper has contributed to academic discourse and sustainability initiatives in Norwegian cruise tourism, arguably supporting initiatives for more sustainable tourism. This commentary highlights how academic research can shape real-world tourism governance practices and offers guidance for collaborations between researchers and external stakeholders.
