A commentary on ‘A critical note on binaries in tourism’: Agential cuts, method assemblages, and relational enactment

Abstract

Eriksson (2025a) offers a timely corrective to the posthumanist turn in tourism studies, rightly cautioning against dissolving difference into undifferentiated flux. We respond in the same spirit of analytical precision, drawing on the concepts of “agential cuts” and “method assemblages” to suggest that binaries should not be retained as ontological starting points — they can be understood as temporary stabilizations enacted by research practices. This reframing affords the analytical clarity Eriksson rightly seeks while shifting focus from being (static categories) to doing (relational enactments). In this spirit, we argue that tourism scholarship requires not the stabilization of inherited binaries but an embrace of the “Pluriverse” — a recognition that multiple relational ontologies must be granted analytical legitimacy if the field is to meet the ethical urgencies of the Anthropocene.
