Panorama del déficit de fecundidad en América Latina a partir de dos indicadores

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es estimar el déficit de fecundidad en América Latina. Para ello se utilizaron datos de las Encuestas Demográficas y de Salud, las Encuestas de Salud Reproductiva y otras encuestas específicas a nivel nacional para 14 países latinoamericanos. El déficit de fecundidad se estimó mediante dos criterios: el número ideal de hijos menos el número de hijos sobrevivientes (indicador 1) y la intención de tener hijos en el futuro (indicador 2). Los resultados evidencian la difusión del fenómeno en América Latina: el porcentaje de mujeres con déficit de fecunddad a partir del indicador 1 varió entre el 20% y el 40%, mientras en el caso del indicador 2 se situó en alrededor del 12%. También se constató que el déficit de fecundidad es mayor en los países donde la fecundidad es más baja (indicador 1) y en aquellos donde las desigualdades de género son mayores.
