Las personas mayores en el Uruguay: el perfil sociodemográfico y los desafíos para las políticas públicas

Abstract

El objeto de este artículo es analizar el envejecimiento poblacional y el perfil sociodemográfico de las personas mayores en el Uruguay en el período comprendido de 1975 a 2011, que ha sido definido sobre la base de las fuentes de datos consideradas, a saber, los censos realizados en el Uruguay en 1975, 1985, 1996 y 2011. En primer lugar se realiza un análisis del proceso de envejecimiento poblacional en este período, y en segundo lugar se traza la evolución del perfil sociodemográfico de las personas mayores por medio de variables como la ruralidad, el nivel educativo, la actividad económica, la cobertura previsional, los arreglos residenciales y las condiciones de la vivienda. De esta forma se describe la evolución de la calidad de vida de las personas mayores en las últimas cuatro décadas en uno de los países más envejecidos de América Latina. Finalmente se plantean algunas limitaciones de las fuentes de datos, y los desafíos a ser afrontados por las políticas públicas desde un enfoque de derechos.
