¿Es recomendable preguntar en el censo acerca de la sobrevivencia del último hijo nacido vivo?

Abstract

En este artículo se abordan los antecedentes sobre el uso de preguntas retrospectivas para la aplicación de métodos indirectos destinados a la estimación de la mortalidad infantil en América Latina, especialmente la consulta acerca de la sobrevivencia del último hijo nacido vivo, además de las recomendaciones y recaudos metodológicos del Centro Latinoamericano y Caribeño de Demografía (CELADE)-División de Población de la CEPAL para su inclusión en los cuestionarios censales de la década de 2010. También se realiza un recuento de los censos efectuados desde la década de 2000 que han incorporado la pregunta sobre la sobrevivencia del último hijo nacido vivo. Asimismo, se presentan estimaciones hechas sobre la base de los tabulados censales y un análisis de la cabalidad de los resultados obtenidos a la luz de otros cálculos de referencia, con el propósito de plantear algunas reflexiones sobre la pertinencia de mantener esta pregunta en los censos de población.
