Abstract

En este artículo se relata lo discutido en la Reunión de expertos sobre envejecimiento de la población, transferencias intergeneracionales y protección social, celebrada en la sede de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL), en Santiago, los días 20 y 21 de octubre de 2009. En esa ocasión, se debatieron diversos temas ligados al proyecto Transferencias intergeneracionales, envejecimiento de la población y protección social en América Latina y el Caribe, el eje central de la investigación que generó el encuentro. Los temas objeto de debate fueron: las implicaciones del envejecimiento en el crecimiento económico y los gastos en salud, los efectos de la crisis económica y financiera iniciada en octubre de 2008 sobre las pensiones y la seguridad económica de las personas mayores, y la relación del proceso de envejecimiento con las transferencias intergeneracionales y las políticas sociales, con especial énfasis en el escenario regional, a partir de los estudios de caso de los cinco países de América Latina que participan del mencionado proyecto (el Brasil, Chile, Costa Rica, México y el Uruguay).
